Dawn Solar Systems manufactures modular systems for using the sun to preheat water. While they are typically used to preheat water for bathing and heating, they can be large enough to provide all of the necessary hot water in climates more forgiving than Chicago. The nice thing about their system is that it can be hidden under the wall or roofing materials. Estimated cost for a 500 sf roof is $13,000.
